You put the filter in the loop, twist the square stock until it tightens, attach your favorite 3/8in socket wrench and TWIIIISSSSSTTTTTT... Cussing and grunting optional. I've actually used one of these things on a stuck filter that damn near crushed the filter because of all the torque generated.
